Abstract
The main concern of this paper is a presentation and criticism of Social Network theory w hich has been vvidely used by James and especially Lesley Milroy in linguistic variation studies. Before explaining Social Network theory, I would like to give some background information about the theory which emerged from previous works. In order to do that we should refer first to Labov's studies. After this outline, I will explain what Social Network theory is and how it is put to use by Jam es and Lesley Milroy in their Belfast research.
